Welcome to CANDLELIGHT STORIESPacific Play Company welcomes you to “An Evening in the Bardo”!
In Tibetan Buddhism, the Bardo is a liminal state of existence between death and rebirth. During the time that spirits are in the Bardo, they can have a variety of experiences, from spiritual awakenings to frightening visions arising from past actions. For those spirits who are prepared, the Bardo offers an opportunity for insight and liberation; for others, it is just a temporary stop on the way to rebirth. Every religion has its own “take” on the afterlife. We chose to focus on the Tibetan Bardo because its complex theology of death, transformation, and rebirth provides a uniquely rich panoply of storytelling possibilities. Whether construed as belief, tradition, or metaphor, the concept of dying and being reborn is a powerful metaphor for many facets of the human experience. We would also like to note that, as playwrights, we do not consider ourselves to be borrowing from Tibetan Buddhism’s ideas or culture here; instead, we humbly importune the deities that the Bardo, as we understand it, may inspire and feed our work. We hope you like the results, and we are thrilled that you have joined us this evening. Enjoy the show! |
